On the 3rd of January 2012 Tarbert Parish Church's roof was badly damaged in a winter storm! The extensive damage left the future of the Church hanging in the balance with repairs estimated at £500,000. The sheer amount of water coming through the ceiling caused major damage to the interior - the oak Chancel, carpets and organ were all damaged by water as well as the paintwork etc.
Thanks to the quick thinking of the Minister Reverend Tommy Bryson, Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Scotland grants were applied for along with various other smaller grants and fund raising initiatives.
The church was repaired and refurbished 2012-14. The work included reslating the enormous roof and installing a heat pump which takes warmth from the surrounding air to make the church warm and comfortable inside. Photographs taken during the repair and refurbishment can be found in our gallery section.
After the Church was repaired it was time to make our iconic Church Clock chime again! MORE INFO TO BE ADDED!!
We are still not finished this mammoth project yet. We still need disabled access into the Church.
The Disabled Access and Toilet Project
The project, which we fundraising for, would firstly provide access in to the church hall {the hall is attached to the main body of the church}. It would consist of a doorway, exterior ramp and parking facilities. The project also would allow an extension, which would upgrade the toilet facilities, currently there is only 1 toilet that is not wheel chair friendly. The new extension, for which we have listed building consent, would be built at the back of the church with 2 toilets and one disabled that could accommodate a wheel chair
We currently have no easy way of making our church accessible and feel that we are unintentionally discriminating against the people who may wish to attend the church services and the groups using the church and hall. We have had queries from some groups, would love to use our hall, but feel that the access and toilet facilities would discriminate against their attendees.
